STAMPS FOR THE WOUNDED
(Service of the Lions International Stamp Club)
2000 – 2001
District Project
Under the leadership of the Lions International Stamp Club, the Stamps for
the wounded program has provided veterans in hospitals across the country
with great comfort and hope. By collecting and distributing stamps,
providing the American people with the opportunity to give back to those
who fought bravely and paid dearly for our freedom.
Since 1942, the staff and supporters of SFTW have devoted their time and
energy to improving the quality of life for wounded veterans. They do it
by stamping out one of the one of the deadliest for the hospitalized
serviceman must fight---ENFORCED IDLENESS.
Stamps can give a bedridden patient, a long-treatment patient, a
convalescent patient, a consuming interest. He can sort and mount stamps
without effort as he lies in bed. If he is ambulatory, or even in a
wheelchair, he can pass happy hours soaking stamps and mounting them in
his own album, or in albums for beginners in his own and other hospitals.
SFTW is a 100% volunteer organization. Founded early in 1942 in response
to an appeal from the Armed Services Hospitals, it was extended to
nationwide scope in 1944 with the aid of the country’s leading stamp
societies.
The How To Is As Follows:
1) Be sure to leave a least a quarter-inch margin of paper around stamps
you tear off envelopes or packages. Please DON’T try to peel or steam
stamps off! Don’t soak stamps or peel or steam stamps off! Don’t soak
stamps or sort them into packages--- this work is much of the fun for the
hospital collector!
2) If you possibly can find time, separate the stamps into 3 groups:
canceled U. S., un-canceled U.S., and foreign stamps. You can ship them
all together, of course, but this preliminary sorting will be a great help
to us.
3) Pack your stamps well. Don’t use something that will break open in
transit. The stamps will be lost, and clerks have a mess to clean up!
4) If you are requesting a tax receipt, please include an estimate of
value citing your reference source, (stamp catalog, dealer buy or sell
list) or an appraisal.
5) PLEASE print your name, club, and complete address on your parcel, so
we’ll know who it’s from! We do our best to acknowledge every shipment,
but some donors inadvertently make it impossible for us to say “Thank
You.”

They will try to answer all queries and acknowledge all donations
promptly, but please be patient. The first order of business at SFTW is
getting the stamps to the veterans who need them!
Helpful Hints for Donations
1) Cut a small square around the stamps.
2) Do not include postmarks except first day covers.
3) Use postage stamps on all shipments rather than meters.
4) Rather than send a few stamps at a time, wait until you have a large
envelope or small box.
5) Cash donations are always needed to offset mailing costs to various VA
Hospitals.
